Crime Stories
Review by: Angie Kibiloski

Let me introduce you to Martin Mystère, the somewhat eccentric hero of Crime Stories (Retail $19.99), a new adventure game from The Adventure Company. He is a mild mannered professor with a penchant for collecting strange and exotic artifacts while traveling the globe to equally strange and exotic locales. He also happens to be a detective who assists the New York police department in solving crimes that have them stumped. For the duration of your time inside Crime Stories, you will be stepping into the well worn, world trotting shoes of this brilliant mind. Brilliant....but strangely absent minded.

A well known man, Professor Eulemberg, has been murdered in his mansion, with few clues as to who would have wanted him dead and why. You must find the clues the police have over looked and uncover the mystery behind the Professor's death. This will take you all the way from the streets of New York to the Mayan ruins of South America. Meanwhile, you must deal with everyday life concerns, like the plumber coming round to fix the flood in the basement, misplacing your wallet, and your wife hiding your closet keys so that you can't get dressed and leave the house. Easy things to deal with? Not, apparently, for Martin Mystère, whose brain is better used for crime solving and identifying ancient artifacts that it is on keeping his personal affairs in order.

You will interact with a number of characters, including Martin's personal valet/friend, Java, the police officers, the forensic team, and a variety of interesting locals in Mexico. You'll find that you can interact with almost every object in a room as well, but only a handful of them are actually useful. The rest are simply there for your entertainment and the chance to get a lesson in artifacts and brick-a-brack from Martin. There are no traditional puzzles in this game. Rather, the challenges are the type that move the plot along with each action. Find a key to unlock a drawer, figure out what you need to get past a finicky policeman, discover the letter/map/artifact/etc., that tells you which location to explore next. Some of these challenges are extremely challenging.

Martin is a very fun character, with all of his inherent quirks, and he'll get you through the game with ample enjoyment. The game duration is nice and long, and the challenges really make you work your brain. Take on the life of a university educated gumshoe, travel the world, and solve the tragic murder of poor Professor Eulemberg. Crime Stories, by The Adventure Company, is definitely worth checking out in the very near future.
